Said goodbye to two dear old friends yesterday. Gandalf and Ozzy were laid to rest in a hilltop clearing near our pond. They were born in to our family.
Once upon a time, body modification and genital jewelry were largely frowned upon within Nudist circles. Today, however, when one goes to a beach or nude resort, he or she is likely to see any number of piercings and adornments. These include nipple piercings, clit piercings, penile piercings, and so-called cock rings. The genital bling is not confined to “lifestylers.” I see it with regularity at well-regarded family resorts like Cypress Cove and Lake Como. As with earrings and belly-piercings, genital piercings are shiny and call attention to the body parts which they adorn.
As I understand the philosophy, the old guard frowned upo n genital piercings because it was believed that such jewelry called undo attention to sex organs and secondary sex characteristics (breasts). Such a focus, it was argued, rendered dubious the assertion that nudity was not inherently sexual. Over time however, these opinions either changed or were largely abandoned in the name of practicality. As more and more patrons took to genital jewelry and numbers dwindled at resorts, it would seem that managers chose to relax policies in order to save the bottom line.
This history, however, is not the focus of my article. Instead, I have a question:
At what point does this jewelry become a sex toy?
Nipple piercings might appear, at first glance to be far from sexual in nature. After all, nipples are common to males and females and breasts are considered secondary sex characteristics as they are not integral to reproduction. This is true, but beyond the appearance of nipple piercings, which many find erotic, they are in tended to heighten the sensitivity of the nipple during sexual play. Despite the sexual rationale for this piercing, pierced nipples are perhaps the most ubiquitous piercing at family-friendly nudist resorts after ears and navels.
Clitoral and penile piercings are clearly sexual in nature. Such piercings are designed to enhance stimulation during fellatio, cunnilingus, and intercourse. In addition to their sexual utility, such piercings are also intended to draw attention to the genitals. This is admitted by piercers and the pierced, alike.
And finally cock rings. These metal and synthetic rings serve two functions: first, they help keep the penis semi- or fully erect for prolonged periods and, second, they help the penis project somewhat outward from the pelvis so that its profile is more pronounced and noticeable. I have seen cock rings used openly, without issue, at Cypress Cove (AANR’s flagship resort) and Lake Como. This despite the fact that their purpose is ex plicitly sexual in nature.
Of course, I don’t want to sound like a moralizing Puritan, but if these decorations are acceptable within a family-friendly nudist environment what else is acceptable? Are butt plugs acceptable? If not, what’s the distinction? And further, if these things are acceptable, do they not undermine the argument that nudism is, at its core, a wholesome lifestyle simply devoid of clothing?
Certainly, I don’t object to adults enjoying their sexuality, but just as there is a time and place for sex in the textile world, are there not appropriate and inappropriate contexts for these adornments in a nudist setting? Should they truly be worn around a pool shared by small children? I for one believe that, as nudists, we should view all parts of the body with equal importance and that the genitals should be no more or less remarkable than a foot or an elbow, but that does not mean one should call attention them.
Enhancing your genitals with sexual jewelry within a nudist context justifies all the fears and reservations held by textiles. This is a problem within modern nudism: we claim that the lifestyle is wholesome; no more sexual than the same activity among textiles, but then decorate our genitals in a manner that would be impossible to perceive while clothed. Might a clothed woman be wearing a clitoral piercing or a clothed man a cock ring? Certainly, but as they are concealed while dressed, they are inherently personal. The same among nudists, though, is more of an advertisement, a solicitation, or exhibition.
As nudists, we conceal very little, but because of that we must be far more mindful of what our decisions imply. I suppose that’s the core of what I’m trying to get at here: I’m very ambivalent about genital jewelry — I hate to look like I’m telling people what they can and can’t wear — but the purpose of the jewelry seems inappropriate within the context of family nudism.
Thoughts worth considering esp as such jewellery is becoming much more common for both sexes in nudist circles
We agree, and this is one of the reasons we are no longer members of aanr. They went from being the primary promoter and protector of family oriented nudism to promoting organizations and clubs that very sexually based. They even promote an organization that I have been told (by several of their members) sets aside a public area for public sex at their annual convention.
We try to avoid posting images in which someone has nipple and/or genital piercings for the exact reasons you list above. For the most part, jewelry is an adornment and is meant to draw the eye. Nudism is not meant to draw the eye to nipples and genitals. When the nipples and/or genitals are pierced, then that jewelry does indeed serve the dual purpose of sexual stimulation, and nudism is not about sexual stimulation.
